Another Day at the "Office"
Another shoot is in the books and I must admit that being in the field can make for some crazy days! The best thing about this class has been that we are getting to see what it is like to be a reporter/anchor for a living without actually having a paycheck riding on our efforts. Our group was given a sample of having to deal with “real word” problems that might happen on a shoot, due to a miscommunication. After some quick thinking and quick acting, our group was able to find a photographer and make it to our shoot only ten minutes late. Ed is the man!!
Once we arrived at our shoot things went more smoothly than I ever could have expected. The captain who we interviewed could not have been more helpful or professional, and his sergeant was equally as helpful. We conducted our interviews without any issues and quickly made our way outside to shoot some B roll. We first shot our stand ups in front of a van that made for an excellent background and things went smoothly for that. After shooting our stand ups several times, or at least several times for me, we started filming our B roll. We were able to gather some interesting shots of police cars, signs, and other objects that were pertinent to our story and then shoot some good B roll of the highway. The experience gave us a taste of dealing with elements that we will encounter in the business world, and that, as I said, is the best thing that we have learned in this class!

Seeing How the Pros Do It
Today’s class was one of the best that we have had during J Term. The class started off kind of slowly as we waited to get into FOX 2, and had to listen to talk about what interns for another J Term class were doing, but after that the class was quite enjoyable. I enjoyed doing an interview in a professional newsroom with a person who actually works with in the media. I found it funny to see that the newsroom was hectic even at two in the afternoon. I can not imagine how crazy things get around air time!
I had no idea that blogging was so much a part of the television industry. The fact that they news is on television and blogging is on the internet makes me think that the two would be in conflict with each other, but I guess that that is not the case.
Everyone at the station was surprisingly friendly, and the fact that Ed knew everyone made the experience even more fun. My only regret about the trip was that we were unable to talk to any of the sportscasters. I wish that we could have stayed at KTVI for a little while longer so that I could have talked to one of the sports anchors. Even though I did not get to meet any of the sportscasters, the trip did have one big highlight. The highlight of the trip, for me, was doing stand up in front of Fox 2. I realize that I was not doing the standup as a member of the Fox 2 news team, but it kind of made me feel like I was.

KTVI Review
The first thing that I noticed about the KTVI newscast was the montage at the opening of the broadcast that served as a way to hype the upcoming stories. The anchors were Mandy Murphy and Tom O’Neil. Murphy was wearing a light blue top, while O’Neil was wearing a navy blue suit and a tie that was almost the same color blue as Murphy’s top. Within the first ten minutes of the broadcast there was a live shot of reporter Sean Conroy on Main Street in St. Charles. Conroy was leading into the story about how people are trying to pass legislation to calm the “rowdy” crowds that hang out at the bars on Main Street.
The first story that caught my attention was the one that I have already mentioned about proposed legislation to quite the nightlife on Main Street in St. Charles. This caught my attention both because it has a direct affect on my social life and also because of the way that the story was covered. I liked that KTVI had a reporter live on Main Street as well as having footage of the city council meeting in which the legislation was being discussed. Another story of interest was one of a teenager who was struck by a car and killed on Lemay Ferry Road. Apparently he was in the middle of the street and the car could not have avoided him. The story was very sad, especially when his grandmother was interviewed. The third story that caught my attention was one involving St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. Anyone who watches the news or reads the papers in St. Louis is familiar with how much controversy has been surrounding that church recently. Last night’s story was about how Archbishop Raymond Burke has started in the process of having Fr. Marec Bozek removed from the priesthood.
The newscast seemed to be done in a very professional manner and the talent seemed credible. I would certainly watch this station again.

Manic Monday
Another Monday and another sports broadcast in the books. I have been doing the sports portion of our news broadcast since last semester, and find that I am still having trouble being comfortable in front of the teleprompter. One of the things that helped my broadcast today was the voice training that we did on Friday. For some reason, today
, I had an especially difficult time getting myself to be comfortable in front of the camera. Today was nice because we were given some packets that contained relaxing exercises, as well as a great deal of other helpful information. After spending time going over the agenda and watching tapes of Prof. Schroeder’s college broadcasts, which were nice to see. While I realize that it must have been difficult for her to show them to us, I did learn from them. It was nice to see someone else who had a difficult transition into the world of T.V.
I was able watch my classmates, some of who have not been in front of the camera very much, and it was reassuring to see that I was not the only one in the class who needs improvement. Today was also fun because we got to see that packages that we put together actually go on the air. It was nice to see two days worth of work come out in the form of such a nice finished product. I look forward to putting together more packages in the future and I have plenty of ideas for things that I would like to do.

Pace Yourself
Well, Friday actually did not involve any lecture time. We did not waste any time getting to work yesterday. Once class began and assignments were turned in, groups began editing with their photographers. The editing for my group required some creativity, but luckily we had a photographer who was very familiar with the Avid system, making anything that we wanted to do possible. I was lucky to be in great group, which made this project go very smoothly.
The best thing that we did in class was learn how to better use our diaphragms when speaking, as well as how to avoid “punching” our words when we speak. It was amazed with how much a “punch” my words without even realizing it. I realized that I unconsciously accentuate certain words when I am trying to make point, which I know realize, is not how one is supposed to broadcast. My pacing, as anyone who knows me can tell you, is rather quick. I was pleased to learn ways to improve my overall broadcast, and to learn what I have been doing wrong. Exercises like the ones that we did yesterday are the kinds of things that I hoped to learn in this class.
I enjoy learning the things that we have to learn about when a broadcaster is actually in front of the camera much more than I enjoy learning about the filming and editing side of things. The first full week is now in the books and I am still very much enjoying this class!

The First of Many Glorious J Term Classes
The time has finally come for our young scholarly minds to get back into the classroom, and I am shocked to find myself happy about that fact! Today’s class was a bit of a wake up call for me because once class started; I was actually back in school! Once I collected myself and remembered how to have an attention span of more than three seconds, I was good to go! Today’s class was exciting for a number of reasons. Among them was the fact that almost everyone in the class wants to pursue a career in television, which means that I am finally in a class of like minded people! Another thing that made me happy in this class is the fact that someone has finally given me, in writing, a list of what I should and should not wear when on television. I have had a general idea of what to wear for some time, but to have a much more concise list was something that brought me great joy! Is it wrong to get excited about completely random things? The greatest part of our first class was the fact that we actually started working in the T.V. studio! I was elated to see that we did not waste any time getting into the studio and getting down to business. I think one of the things that I will enjoy the most about this class is the fact that it is a “doing” class and not a “studying” class. It is nice to have a class where I can put the skills that I have developed to use! I can not wait to see what I learn in the coming days!

I very much agree that it is great to finally have a class of like-minded people. I think that if the class is even half as dedicated as I think they are about television, we should have a fantastic J-Term.
